More 3D Model Box Types

Overview

The rotatable 3D model boxes in LaunchBox are a standout feature, bringing physical media to life in a digital space. They offer a unique, nostalgic, and highly visual way to explore game collections—flipping the box to view the front, spine, and back feels authentic and satisfying.

Currently, LaunchBox offers four 3D model types:

• Box

• DVD Case

• Jewel Case

• Long Jewel Case

These cover many platforms, but key systems from the cassette era are missing appropriate models, which limits the representation of those libraries.

Primary Request: Cassette Jewel Case Models 🎞️

Add support for cassette-style jewel cases, as used by:

  • Amstrad CPC

  • ZX Spectrum

  • Commodore 64

  • BBC Micro

• Include both single and double cassette formats, which were commonly used across these systems.

• These platforms make up a significant portion of retro collections, and having accurate models would dramatically improve the presentation of these games in LaunchBox.

Nice-to-Have Additions

• Genesis / Mega Drive cases – Unique clamshell designs that differ in shape and layout from current options.

• Potentially support additional region-specific cases in the future (e.g., Famicom or PC Engine packaging styles).

Benefits

✅ More accurate and immersive 3D representations for iconic systems.

✅ Better support for collectors and fans of European and cassette-era platforms.

✅ Greater consistency across platforms for users who prioritize 3D box views.

✅ Complements other feature requests such as multi-spine support and custom backgrounds.

    Hi there,

With last week’s release of LaunchBox for Windows 14.0, this feature has now been implemented. You can update to the latest version from within the app to receive this.

Notes on the release can be found below:

    LaunchBox for Windows - 14.0

We know this request covers more than just double jewel and casette cases that were part of the release, however since the most requested part of this was casette cases which has been covered. If there are any other remaining cases you want to see implemented it would be great if you can list them as new requests so we can track those seperately.

    Cheers,

Great news, many thanks! Is there any scope to increase the quality/detail of the cassette model? I can request the other 3D box types separately, as you suggest above!

We can certainly consider it, if you want to pop your wishlist for specifics for this into a request we can take it into consideration

Agreed, the list of additional cases here could be endless but there’s certainly room for more popular additions. Have fleshed out the request and opening for the community to discuss

I’d like to float the idea of being able implement custom 3D models for model boxes. If we could also combine this with support for scripting of models, this could be an extremely powerful, and extremely cool, tool for immersion.

There are many, many games out there that use different variations of box sizes and shapes and many have different opening mechanisms (Double jewel, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, clamshells, slipcases, cardboard sleeve etc). For example, ZX Spectrum alone uses multiple different size of cassette jewel cases - singles, double depth, double width, There are also many digital games that never came in a box - such as Tiger handhelds (plastic blister pack), VMU Games, Tamagotchis etc. I think it’d be a cool idea to open up 3D models to the community, who can then implement all the niche box types any particular person needs. Not only would this allow us to get a wider range of boxes, but we could also expand the model viewer to support discs, cartridges, cards, chips, cassettes etc also. This could potentially be extra exciting - imagine being able to browse the box of your favourite game, and then, thanks to a scripting language and a modular plugin, being able to OPEN that box, and look at the manual and the cartridge in 3D, along with anything else that came in the box - T-shirts, pin badges, foldable posters, magazines, miniature figures for collector editions etc.

We could take the 3D model viewer - something that’s already neat, and turn it into something more immersive and comprehensive.

It could be modular, working on a plugin system to reduce unnecessary bloat for those who aren’t interested, and the models could even possibly be supported by scripts that allow the cases to be opened and the contents inside them to be inspected also, in the same 3D viewer.

I know it’d be a ton of work, but man, that’d be awesome.

All good points, well raised. I’ve had thoughts like this also but never articulated them in a post. Fully agree, it would be awesome!

Will the PS3 case be updated?

It is certainly within the scope of this request, since this involves added cases from multiple consoles, but right now we cannot guarantee which consoles will be included if this request gets picked up

Sorry for the wall of text, but there are a few things about the 3D boxes I’d like to mention. I’d also like to point out that Long Jewel Cases are very inaccurate currently. Sega CD, Saturn and some early PSX games are the only systems that use them, but their spines are actually around 22mm wide while, The "Long Jewel Case" 3D Model dimensions seem to be about 10mm, which is the size of a standard CD Jewel case spine. No actual game system has a case like that. Another very commonly used type of 3D Box that is missing is a Double Jewel Case, which is used for many, many titles from the PlayStation era, including Final Fantasy 7/8/9. If you use accurate box art scans of these games, the artwork is crushed because the current 3D Jewel Case assumes you are using the manual cover as the front art, but double Jewel cases don't use the manual for the cover. Additionally it would be nice to get Japanese/PAL styled PlayStation cases as well. Another thing I'd like to mention is that it would be nice to be able to make the DVD styled cases opaque, for certain PC games, Xbox 360 or PS4.

For cassette, something like this (though less shiny):

    https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/compact-cassette-leila-k-93236caf75e44a27b033a2f3a645e40a

It has front, spine and back parts to the cover. With systems like the CPC and C64, the back part sometimes covered the whole of the rear part of the case.

Any progress on this one? I’d love to go through the CPC collection and make compatible artwork for the 3D model box!

At the very least can we get a tutorial on how we can make and add 3D Model boxes ourselves. I believe the community can handle it.

It would be nice to have a Neo Geo box. It’s kind of different.

And what about more spine options? CD cases has left and right spines. Cardboard boxes have 4. You could even have multiple spines in one single image and map them accordingly, or just name them spine1-4 or spine left, right, top, bottom.
