Multiple User Profiles & Parental Control Pin-Code

Summary:

Add support for multiple user profiles or sub-accounts within LaunchBox, each with its own set of content filters, preferences, and optional PIN-code access—primarily to support parental controls and age-appropriate content restrictions 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🔒.

Problem:

For households where LaunchBox is shared across users—especially with children—it can be difficult to manage which games are visible or accessible. While filters exist, there’s currently no way to create separate profiles or enforce restrictions in a secure way.

Parents may want to prevent younger users from accessing games with mature content, while still enjoying their full library themselves. Manually adjusting filters or hiding games each time is not practical or secure, especially if kids are tech-savvy.

Proposal:

Introduce a user profile system with the following capabilities:

  • ✅ Create multiple profiles, each with custom filters (e.g., by platform, playlist, age rating, genre)

  • 🔐 PIN-code protection to restrict switching between profiles

  • 🎯 Default launch profile that opens automatically with LaunchBox or Big Box

  • 🔄 Option to toggle profiles quickly, e.g., from a locked UI or launch screen

  • 📝 Optionally tie each profile to save settings, favorites, play history, or UI layout

As an alternative (if a full profile system is too complex initially), a simplified parental PIN-code feature could restrict access to certain games based on ESRB/PEGI age rating or custom filters—ideal for creating a kid-friendly mode.

Benefits:

  • Helps parents confidently share their gaming setup with their children

  • Makes LaunchBox more family-friendly and versatile

  • Reduces the risk of younger users accessing age-inappropriate content

  • Offers a smoother experience compared to temporary or manual filtering workarounds

  • Aligns LaunchBox with common features found in modern media and gaming platforms 🧸🎮

User Feedback Insight:

This request stems directly from parents who use LaunchBox with their families. One user noted they have two young children and would love to be able to restrict access to certain content easily—especially if it could be managed with PIN protection. They confirmed 100% of the request is for parental control functionality.

Hi there, thanks for the great suggestion here. I wonder if I could dig into the use-case you’re looking to solve here. I’m assuming it’s relating to some sort of parental controls systems, whereby you can more closely control what games / playlists are presented.

We do have a request to implement a fully fleshed out parental control system that includes a lot of these features, so just curious if thats the case and I can get your support and suggestions added to it.

    Cheers,

Completely 100% parental controls :-) I have 2 young kids so this would be a wonderful addition for me.
