Add a Built-In Emulator Profile for GenX
📋 Summary
Add GenX to LaunchBox’s built-in emulator profiles so users can configure it quickly for supported Sega platforms.
GenX is an open-source Windows emulator supporting Genesis/Mega Drive, Sega CD, 32X, Game Gear, and Master System games.
❗ Problem
GenX can currently be added to LaunchBox manually, but users must configure its executable, associated platforms, and supported file types themselves.
This makes setup less convenient and increases the chance of platforms being mapped incorrectly.
💡 Proposal
Add a predefined GenX profile to the Add/Edit Emulator interface.
Selecting GenX should automatically populate:
Emulator name
Supported LaunchBox platforms
Associated file types
Default command-line configuration
Appropriate archive extraction settings
GenX supports direct launching through:
genx.exe "path\to\game"
No additional command-line parameters are required for standard game launching.
🕹️ Supported Platforms
The profile should include:
Sega Genesis
Sega Mega Drive
Sega 32X
Sega CD
Sega Game Gear
Sega Master System
Where applicable, Sega CD 32X games should also be supported through their existing platform association.
📁 Supported Files
Depending on the platform, GenX supports:
.md.gen.smd.bin.32x.cue.iso.chd.gg.sms.zip
📦 Benefits
Makes GenX easier to configure
Reduces manual platform and file-type setup
Provides another actively developed Sega emulator option
Supports several Sega platforms through one application
Works with both standard and portable GenX installations
⚠️ Considerations
GenX currently supports 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11
Sega CD games require user-provided regional BIOS files
The emulator is still relatively new, so it should not initially replace existing recommended defaults
Version 1 should add the built-in configuration profile; automatic downloading or installation could be considered separately
LaunchBox should link only to the project’s official GitHub repository and releases
