When downloading media through LaunchBox, you may occasionally see a 404 Not Found error from EmuMovies.

This usually means LaunchBox found a possible media item for your game, but EmuMovies could not provide the file when LaunchBox tried to download it.

In most cases, this does not mean anything is wrong with your LaunchBox installation or your game library.

Why this happens

LaunchBox connects to EmuMovies to search for and download available media. Sometimes EmuMovies may list media as available, but the file cannot be downloaded at that moment.

Common causes include:

  • Temporary EmuMovies service issues

  • The EmuMovies API being down or partially unavailable

  • A media file being moved, renamed, or temporarily unavailable

  • A mismatch between the game title, platform, region, or media type

  • The media being available when browsing EmuMovies manually, but not available through the download method LaunchBox uses

  • Temporary syncing issues on EmuMovies' side

Note: If many games are failing at once, especially across multiple platforms, the issue is more likely to be a temporary EmuMovies service issue rather than a problem with your specific games.

What a 404 error means

A 404 Not Found error means EmuMovies could not find the requested file at the time LaunchBox tried to download it.

For example, LaunchBox may find that media is listed for a game, but when it tries to download the actual image, video, manual, or other file, EmuMovies may report that the file is not available.

What you can do

If you see EmuMovies 404 errors, try the following:

  1. Wait and try again later

EmuMovies service issues are often temporary. If many downloads are failing, waiting and retrying later may resolve the issue.

  2. Check your EmuMovies login

Make sure your EmuMovies username and password are correct in LaunchBox.

  3. Try a smaller download

If you are downloading media for many games at once, try downloading media for a single game or a smaller group of games.

  4. Try different media types

If one type of media fails, such as videos or manuals, other media types may still download correctly.

  5. Report repeat issues

If the same games continue to fail, report the game name, platform, media type, and error message so the issue can be investigated.

If only certain games fail

If only a few games return 404 errors, the issue may be related to those specific titles.

This can happen with:

  • Alternate game names

  • Regional versions

  • Special characters in the game title

  • Platform naming differences

  • Specific media types that are unavailable for that game

In these cases, you can try checking the game title and platform, then retrying the media download later.

If most or all games fail

If most EmuMovies downloads are failing, EmuMovies may be temporarily down or having service problems.

Your LaunchBox library is safe. The best option is usually to wait and try again later.

What to include when reporting the issue

When contacting support, please include:

  • The platform name

  • The game name

  • The media type that failed

  • Whether it happens for one game or many games

  • Whether you were downloading one game or using a bulk download

  • A screenshot or copy of the 404 error, if available

This information helps determine whether the issue is temporary, related to a specific game, or caused by an EmuMovies-side media availability problem.
